Adolescent Suicide Joseph Connelly Gazzola used to be a Northeastern University football star. He has since taken his own life, and it has hit everyone he knew very hard. As reported in the Boston Globe, â€Å"Mr. Gazzola, known as Joe, was born and raised in North Attleborough, showing a love of football and a tolerance of all types of people. ‘He didnt care much about differences,’ said his father. ‘He could relate to anyone. He was the kind of kid who could walk with princes and paupers and never see a difference.’† Gazzola is not alone. There have been a numerous suicides on college campuses as well as among teens in the same age bracke. It is a real proble and it is time to take note. This scary fact is one that all college students need to seriously face and look for not only within themselves but within their friends as well. On the campus here at Northeastern University, we have had one reported suicide this year from an icon in our sports program, Joseph Connelly Gazzola, which has hit some people hard. Mayor Blasio criticized PlaNYC on the ground that this plan failed to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. It was further criticized on the ground that the projects dealt under PlaNYC is capital intensive and expensive and can only be financed by former Mayor Bloombergs office (McPhearson et al., 2015). Since the Mayor did not extend financial support to implement the projects under PlaNYC and used the defense that he could arrange support through his network of corporate connections and wealthy individuals. The plan failed to deal with issues related to frisk policing, combat inequality and other sustainability issues. After Blasio was elected Mayor, he supported and sponsored legislation that encouraged green building standards, created better emissions standards and encouraged better waste management. Policy recommendation In my opinion, it is highly recommended that in order to ensure effective sustainability policy, effective and active support should be provided at the community level. In several cases, the issues affecting the environment are framed negatively, purporting to scare the people who possess the capability to resolve such issues. The fact that people are so attached with their mobility and their lifestyles that they feel reluctant to give up their life and to ask them to change their lifestyle would be a weak political strategy (Childers, et al., 2015). However, in order to ensure urban sustainability, the change of lifestyle is often perceived as a positive step to move towards a better inspiring and convenient lifestyle. In this country, to build a sustainable society it must be based on the traditional values prevalent in the country that is, freedom, innovation and acceptance of other people, lifestyles and cultures of other people. It is equally important to have a strong political base as several political leaders understand that sustainability would drive the economic growth (Plunz, 2016). Problem related to sustainability should be a political priority An effective sustainability policy for NYC must include issues arising in growth, equity and resiliency, etc. A necessary condition for the shift to a sustainable city is the demand made by the public for the development of such city. While PlaNYC was a powerful tool, OneNYC is an addition to the third dimension of social equity (Cohen Reynolds, 2015). The sustainability related issues should be given priority, as the adoption of sustainable practices is fundamental in making cities a desirable place for both residents and businesses. The incline in the consumption and car ownership has led to urban chaos and the escape of the middle class to high-carbon working and living environments. The urban cities must adopt sustainable solutions that will allure residents, encourage sustainable lifestyles and stimulate economic growth (McPhearson, Hamstead Kremer, 2014). The shift to the sustainable city and towards a renewable resource-based economy shall require inspired leadership and political determination. This can be achieved with a base of political support for safeguarding the environment (Wheeler Beatley, 2014). However, environmental related issues have been difficult for journalists and politicians to comprehend. There is a growing threat to the planet as the environmental issues have shifted from periphery to the center of the policy and political agenda in the United States and all over the world (Wheeler Beatley, 2014). The protection of the environment becomes a highly salient political issue when the government of the country is unable to succeed in implementing effective programs including protection of water, air and land. However, the urgency to resolve such issues draws away once such programs are implemented successfully (Conway, 2014). In NYC, former Mayor Bloomberg played a significant role in the development of global urban sustainability policy by initiating action at the local level. He made climate adaptation and sustainability as his primary priorities during his administration. One of the PlaNYC agendas was to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of the city to 30% by 2030, which is an ambitious goal for a city and was considered as one of the most carbon-efficient role given to its high extensive use of mass transit and high density. This plan has achieved success in incorporating environmental protection and standard of life initiatives to promote urban economic development (Elmqvist, 2014). Some of the initiatives signify the objectives of the PlaNYC, which includes the Million Trees NYC program that aims at planting one million trees for next ten years with an objective to reduce storm water runoff and cool the city. The Select Bus System is a form of transit initiative that provided buses to areas that were underserved by the subway system (McPhearson et al., 2016). The Greener, Greater Buildings plan was an internationally recognized initiative that was undertaken with the objective of enhancing energy efficiency in the large buildings in the New York City. Classical Music Concert Report Essay Baroque Orchestra and McGill Capable Antic on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at 7:30 p. M. What special about this concert was the guest conductor and solo violinist Adrian Butterflies. The performed pieces were Welcome to all the pleasures, Leasers Violin Concerto in A major, Localities Introduction eternal in G major, C. P. E. Bachs Confusion in C major and My heart is indicting. The venue was Reheated Hall of McGill University. The program began with Welcome to all the pleasures, which is an ode written for the Saint Cecilia Day, composed by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell in 1683. It opens with a symphony with canonic violin parts. Purcell creates a concerto gross effect with the contrapuntal violin melodies. Then comes the countertenor solo which I found very impressing. The second piece they performed was Violin Concerto in A major, Pop. 7:6 composed by the French Baroque violinist and composer Jean-Marie Lacier. After conducting the first piece, Adrian Butterflies played the solo violin for this one. This ancestor begins with an allegro ma non presto movement, which is Joyful and fast, but not at an extreme rate. The first movement is in retooling form. The orchestra keeps returning to the main theme after violin solos. This movement has a homophobic texture and is in simple duple meter. The second movement is an aria at a slower tempo. It is in the variations form, but this time in compound duple meter. One thing that grabbed my attention is that the variations do not overlap. Every variation ends before the next one starts. The third and last movement of the violin concerto is the segue form, in which the meter stays as compound but the memo accelerates and becomes allegro. They were accompanied by a choir of male and female singers on the choral pieces. The venue was very suitable for a Baroque concert. In the concert hall, there was giant pipe organ, which gave the venue an authentic visual aesthetic. Adrian Butterflies is an extraordinary violinist and a successful conductor. His control over his instrument was captivating. I enjoyed this concert in particular, not only because he has the ability to play all those fast licks on his violin without an effort, but also McGill Baroque Orchestra and Capable Antic performed the pieces in the best way possible. To that, I would like to add that the pieces were well chosen. Although C. P. E. Is The Military Draft Ethical Politics Essay For years, nations around the world have chosen to turn to drafting citizens for the military against their will in order to have an adequate number of soldiers for wars occurring at the time. We must question, Is this ethical? In this paper I will examine various sources and ethical theories from throughout history to decide whether or not the drafting of citizens to join the military is in fact ethical. I believe that, while exploring these sources, we will find that, from an ethical standpoint, military drafting is not a morally correct option. Examining the ethical standpoint of military drafting is quite important to our nation because, at the moment, there is debate going on about whether or not women should be drafted as well as men. This brings up an entirely new option to drafting. Throughout history, it has been the men who have gone off to fight while the women have stayed home to take care of things. Nowadays, women make up a large division of the military, which means that there is a greater number soldiers; thus eliminating much of the need to draft new soldiers. Without such a great need for soldiers, the people of the United States would not be forced to engage in practices or be part of a cause in which they dont believe. The consideration of the drafting of women has particular importance to me, because, as a woman, even though I love and value my country, I have no desire to join the armed forces. It is against everything for which I stand and in which I believe to kill another human being. Ethical egoism is the idea that if a person is not always being 100% selfish and looking out for his or her own personal benefit and gains, he or she should be. This idea suggests that we humans should not do anything that doesnt make us happy, give us pleasure or benefit us in the long run; if each of us is always looking out for our own benefit, then the world will be a better place because everyone will have that driving factor to make their goals happen and thus, everyone will work harder. All we truly have is ourselves, so if we give up what we want or need for the good of another, we are giving up on the one person who matters to us and we are losing ourselves in the process. The theory of Ethical Egoism would say that, if joining the military is something that will benefit you over the long run and which you genuinely love, then it can be a wise decision. The armed forces generally pay quite well and have good benefits, such as free tuition for school and career placement. These perks can be a blessing in many peoples lives, so, if you are one who thinks it would be a good use of your time and energy, then by all means, join the military and serve your country. However, if joining the military is not something that you would love to do, or if it is something which contradicts your moral beliefs, then it would not be a wise decision in the long run and you should not be forced into serving. Many people who have been drafted have suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the horror which they had to endure and for which they were not mentally or emotionally prepared. The theory of Utilitarianism states that an action is right or wrong in proportion to its ability to promote or destroy the overall happiness of everyone affected; thus it is morally correct to take action for the greater good, not simply for personal gain or the pleasures of one individual. There is also Non-hedonistic Utilitarianism which defines actions taken to be right or wrong in proportion to the amount of good which they promote in the world. This theory takes happiness and pleasure out of the equation and simply looks at what it will contribute to the world. Both of these theories look at the common interest and decide which actions to take based on the benefit of the body as a whole. According to Utilitarianistic ideals, if the drafting of civilians for the military will promote the common good, it is the right thing to do. This may mean that in time of war, if there is a need for more soldiers, drafting may be the key to keeping our nation safe from invaders or protecting soldiers in lands we are at odds with, thus being for the common good. However, it may not be for the greater happiness in the equation. Many Americans are at odds with the war which is happening now and would do anything to stop it. Do we include their happiness in the picture? What about the happiness of those whose country we have invaded? It is difficult to know whos happiness and well-being should be taken into account. In my opinion, military drafting is morally wrong. No one should be forced to join a service in which they are asked to perform act of violence against others. I know that, with the beliefs I hold about life and violence, if I were drafted, I would kill myself before I could force myself kill another human being. I love and value my country, but whether the person I was asked to kill was good or bad, I would not be able to go through with it. Studies have shown that, in past wars, even those men who were not drafted but had birth dates that made them eligible for the draft had a higher mortality rate than the group with birth dates that exempted them: Suicide was increased by 13%, death from motor-vehicle accidents by 8%, and total mortality by 4%. I believe that this clearly proves that those who do not enter the service voluntarily are not mentally or emotionally prepared enough to handle what occurs on the battlefield, therefore, having them there puts them and their comrades at g reater risk. Draftees also do not make as much money as enlistees. Though both are putting their life at risk for the same cause, one is scrutinized against while the other is rewarded and praised. This segregation no doubt is demoralizing to the draftees because they feel as if they are under-valued compared to the other soldiers, this creates resentment and misunderstanding in a field where they need to remain united as a body. I believe that George Washington would disagree with me on this topic. He felt that every man should fight for the freedom of our country and that if they were to enjoy the privileges that others were willing to fight for, they should step up and fight for freedom. He believed in honor and putting the greater good ahead of ones own comforts. His troops lived in the cold for months with no decent food, clothes, or housing and yet they stuck to the mission until the end no matter the consequences. In conclusion, I believe that there is great honor in fighting for a common goal and working to protect the safety and happiness of all, but that in order to truly give your best and keep the safety of those around you, you must be committed to what you are doing and have a personal drive. Sense of personal duty is such a big part of what keeps the men and women in our military level-headed, safe, and determined. If one is forced to join, he or she may not have this drive and can endanger those around them, which is why, after careful research and consideration, I feel that having a military draft is morally wrong.

Japan and South Korea's unstable relationship could be improved by sharing their different cultures more or through a military alliance with each other. South Korea and Japan are both allies with the United States, but Japan and South Korea still remain unallied to each other. Jane Eyre    St. John Rivers makes some very intriguing choices in Jane Eyre. He is constantly faced with difficult decisions to make. Whether it be refusing his true love or moving to India to give his life serving others, there is always an interesting twist where St. John is concerned. His importance in the novel may be evident to readers, but they may not always understand his decisions and his actions. The choices he makes are exemplary of a man who has given his life to serve God and His people. St. John, at his introduction in the novel, is a clergyman with plans to become a missionary someday soon. This is not surprising for clergymen, according to Andrew F. Walls, author of The Missionary Movement in Christian History, since "a missionary was essentially a preacher, and a preacher should normally be a minister" (161). At this time, it was considered normal for a clergyman to become a missionary. But a missionary did have to be more than a clergyman. He also must have "common sense" and "competence," Walls says. St. John has all of these qualities and more, making him perfect for a life of sacrifice. St. John Rivers is introduced into the novel as a savior. He takes Jane into his home and under his care when she believes to have reached the end of her road. It is here, at Moor House with St. John, that she is given a new beginning with a new identity, job, and, eventually, a family with St. John and his sisters. As a clergyman, St. John is a good, moral person whose intentions are to provide for his people and his family. He also eventually wants to become a missionary someday soon. Jane likes the idea of this and it is evident to readers that Jane admires St. John and loves him like the brother he has become to her. He even gives her a job as a teacher at a school for less fortunate children. It is here that she is introduced to Rosamond Oliver and her father. After meeting Rosamond Oliver through her teaching position and hearing her talk about St. John with admiration, Jane concludes that they are meant to be for each other. Contemporary Hawaiian Music Essay

There is a famous Hawaiian saying, â€Å"You know if the Hawaiian harmonies are good if they give you chicken skin† (Alternative Hawaii, 2002) and, I must say, listening to the online radio streaming of KCCN FM100 gave me goosebumps. Being more attuned to â€Å"Western pop† culture, it was a pleasantly refreshing experience for me to sit for an hour and listen to contemporary reggae, urban music and ragga with an island beat that’s truly Hawaiian. Fourteen original Hawaiian songs, including the Top 5 hits in KCCN charts, were played during a late afternoon program that also aired a couple of brief â€Å"Hele On† traffic news, a commercial each from Earth Share and Hawaii. gov, and 8 radio ads encouraging the people to participate at the ongoing 2010 Census. The DJ on deck did not talk much except to give quick, in-between plugs for a party event and to introduce songs. A distinctly noticeable feature in the contemporary Hawaiian music is its fondness to love and desire. The soulful songs I listened to speak of the excitement of love, romancing the heart of another or accepting a love’s rejection. But even though the lyrics contain sad words, the melody is always upbeat and sensual. The island reggae beat and the smooth ballad is very easy on the ears especially when instruments, like the ukulele, saxophone and native drums blend together to produce the perfect harmony. The result is one relaxed listener mentally transported in an island paradise in Hawaii, and its effect to music lovers is no less than rejuvinating the soul. I think KCCN FM100, being a radio station that plays modern hip-hop and soul Hawaiian music, carries the familiar radio spunk of other American hiphop stations. The DJ was very energetic and in a party mood, and even the traffic reporter was such a chipper in delivering traffic updates as a local RnB song played in the background. The advertisements aired between the 4:30-to-5:30pm radio show were mostly the varying versions of promoting the 2010 Census Count – explaining what the census results would mean to businesses, the improvement of social services and what it means to the future generation. I think delivering the message using both in English and the local dialect reveals a lot about the listeners’ profile of KCCN, which is a mixture of both modern and traditional Hawaiian folks. I also believe that although all local songs aired were sang in English, they always make it a point to bring out the traditional Hawaiian flavor. This much is obvious in both the songs and commercials played. Listening to KCCN and the music aired there makes me realize how global Hawaiian music can be in terms of its appeal to both young and old, locals and foreigners. Everybody can appreciate an island style music inspired by the world-loved Bob Marley and urban rhythm of the modern RnB.

The successions of these two shots give us the impression that the hand belonged to the protagonist, Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe plays the general Maximus Deridius. The opening shots of Saving Private Ryan feature an Old man walking down a path in bright light on a sunny day. While the man is walking a group of people follow him down the path, telling the audience that this man is quite important. The man is walking in a graveyard and after walking to a particular grave he collapses crying. His sadness gives the impression that someone he knew and loved had died and was buried in that graveyard. The shot then switches to a group of men in a boat which again uses chiaroscuro. There is then a series of montages featuring close ups of the men in the boat. The emotions of the men are shown in the expressions on their faces and the dark shadowy light the scene is bathed in. The protagonist of the film Tom Hanks is then shown in a close up shot but it is different to the way that we are first shown Russell Crowe in Gladiator. The first time that we see Russell Crowe in Gladiator he looks deep in thought and with very little fear on his face. His clothes depict what class of man he is (wealthy, powerful,) and also show the genre of the film to be war as he is holding a sword and wearing armor. The first time that Tom Hanks is introduced his clothes show the genre of the movie in the same way as gladiator, but he is not instantly recognizable as the protagonist of the film; he looks just as scared as the other people on the boat and has no instant sign of authority. As the men approach the shore, the sound of gunfire can be heard, which tells the audience that a battle is happening and that these mens fear is the onslaught of battle. The opening sequence of both texts show the genre of the movie by using strong battle scenes and sounds and both introduce why Tom Hanks and Russell Crowe are the protagonists of the films. Russell Crowe walks through the ranks of his army and is referred to as General by many. The director uses this to show the authority of the character. The director of S. P. R shows Tom Hanks to be powerful by having take control of the disbanded army around him and he seems to be the least distressed by the battle going on around him. Both texts feature strong battle sequences in their opening scenes. The scenes are seen in a different way by the audience because inter-textuality will tell people that the Roman Army in Gladiator was unbeatable and the most powerful fighting force the world had ever seen. We know that the protagonist is a Roman general and we know that the opposing army is not strong enough to beat them from what has been said by the characters already so the audience has a basic idea of what to expect from the battle: the Romans are going to win. In S. P. R Tom Hanks and his army are put in an impossible position from the off set. When they hit the shore the sound of gunfire fills the air and immediately pushes them back towards the sea and in a seemingly impossible position. Tom Hanks role as the protagonist is emphasized by the way that the people around him all turn to him for orders when they first hit the shore and begin fighting. The fighting scenes in both films are shot with a hand held camera allowing the audience to feel as if they are in the battle themselves. In S. P. R a hand held camera is used from behind the German stationery guns on the bank to show how easily the Americans are being picked off from the beach. Close up shots in Gladiator show the expressions of the Roman army and none of them look scared or worried about the battle. During the battle they use close ups of the fighting to show the Roman army defeating the German army with ease. A close up of Russell Crowe is used when he turns around and almost kills one of his own men, only to stop and smile at him. This shows he is used to fighting dangerous battles and how undeterred by the fighting and the sounds around him he appears to be. The music in the two opening sequences is similar and is used to create the same affect on the audience. The slow first scenes of the two movies have very little sound as the directors want you to focus on the messages on the screen. The flag at the start of S. P. R symbolizes what the Americans were fighting for: the love of their country. Gladiator features a hand being run through a field which tells you little apart from that the hand belongs to someone who is married. The battle scenes in the two films have very little music but you can hear the sounds of the battle distinctly. In S. P. R the sounds of gunfire is very loud and the cries of the men screaming and yelling are quite disturbing. In Gladiator the sounds of clashing swords fills the air with cries coming only from the German army. Music is absent as it is normally used to project the emotions of the characters on screen onto the audience. In a scene with a strong battle there are so many emotions of so many people fighting that there wouldnt be enough music to symbolize what they were all feeling. I think that Gladiator raises the audiences expectations more in the opening sequences as they show the Roman army to be brutal and unmerciful which is shown more and more in the rest of the film. Saving Private Ryan has a brilliantly directed opening and gives the audience a real insight into what war is like. Yet the rest of the film goes downhill and doesnt give you what you would expect from the dazzling opening sequences.
